Xiaomi Enforces Price Hike on Tablet Portfolio: Pad 8 and Redmi Pad 2 Series Affected

Xiaomi has officially revised the pricing for its tablet lineup in India. Effective immediately, the Xiaomi Pad 8, Redmi Pad 2 Pro, and Redmi Pad 2 are now more expensive, with the highest jump reaching Rs 2,000.

This adjustment arrives just weeks before the crucial festive shopping season, a period where discounts and “value-for-money” typically dominate the conversation. For potential buyers, this means the budget landscape for Android tablets has shifted slightly.

Revised Prices at a Glance

The new pricing structure, initially spotted by tech enthusiast Sanju Choudhary on X (formerly Twitter), shifts the entry-level barrier for Xiaomi’s slabs.

  • Redmi Pad 2 (4GB/128GB LTE): Now priced at Rs 19,999. This model remains the cheapest in the range, though the price hike narrows the gap between it and its competitors.
  • Redmi Pad 2 Pro: Now starting at Rs 27,999. This bump pushes the “Pro” model deeper into the mid-range territory, forcing it to compete with more established players in that segment.
  • Xiaomi Pad 8 (8GB/128GB): The flagship model sees the steepest absolute increase, now retailing at Rs 37,999. With this price point, the Pad 8 is inching dangerously close to the premium tier usually occupied by Apple and Samsung.

Why Are Prices Going Up?

The timing of this move raises eyebrows, but it aligns with a persistent trend in the consumer hardware space: the global memory shortage. As DRAM and NAND flash prices continue to climb, manufacturers are forced to pass these costs onto the consumer.

However, doing so right as sale events like Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and Amazon’s Great Indian Festival approach is a risky strategy. While the festive season historically offers significant discounts, buyers shouldn’t expect to see historic lows this year. The “effective” price during these sales will likely be the same as the old MRP, making the “discount” more of a mirage than a genuine saving.

Is the Value Proposition Still Intact?

This is the core question for the Indian buyer.

  • The Redmi Pad 2: At just under Rs 20,000, it still manages to hold onto its budget crown. However, it is no longer the “steal” it used to be. Buyers in this bracket are extremely sensitive to price shifts.
  • The Redmi Pad 2 Pro: This is the sweet spot that feels the most pressure. At Rs 28,000, it is now competing directly with aggressive alternatives that have been on the market for longer and might see clearance sales soon.
  • The Pad 8: This is the most concerning. At nearly Rs 38,000, Xiaomi is asking for a premium. To justify this, they will likely need to rely heavily on bundling accessories (like the keyboard or stylus) as a value-add to sway potential buyers.

Our Take

A price hike is never welcome, but it is the reality of the current market. Xiaomi is betting on its brand loyalty to weather this storm. However, with inventory likely piling up due to the increased prices, we might see interesting bundle deals popping up on Amazon and Flipkart during the sale week.
